Ukulele Syllabus

Campus: Summerhill International College and online


If you are looking to unwind and play some of your favorite songs as a hobby, or take the ukulele and the famed sound of Hawaii to the levels or virtuosity.
The Ukulele syllabus is designed to accomodate both. Please consult with your Teacher to get the correct type of ukulele.
 
Beginner
  • Basic open position chords and strumming patterns
  • Master a minimum of 6 pieces on a beginner level
  • Understand the C and G key map and how to accompany in these keys
  • Learn 1 octave of the C and G major scale
  • *For Aural* Must be able to sing scales and chords worked on through syllabus
  • *Optional* Basic Improvisation
 
Intermediate
  • Understand and be to use Barre chords – Major, minor, diminished and 7ths 
  • Master a minimum of 6 pieces on an intermediate level
  • Understand and know at least 6 different key maps and relative minors and be able to accompany in them
  • Major, Pentatonic and Minor scale across the ukulele neck
  • Basic chord construction – triads and 7ths
  • *For Aural* Must be able to sing scales and chords worked on through syllabus
  • Be able to transcribe a selected piece at current level
  • Compose or arrange a minimum of 2 songs
  • *Optional* Intermediate improvisation and solo construction 1
 
Advanced
  • Comprehensive study of blues on the ukulele, 12 bar-blues, blues improvisation and blues modal concepts (If students wish to study this field on the ukulele they must opt for improvisation on the beginner and intermediate levels)
  • Master a minimum of 6 pieces on an advanced level
  • Must know all key maps and relative minors and be able to accompany in them
  • Modal concepts for ukulele
  • Advanced chord construction – Upper structures and tensions (eg 13ths, 9#11 etc)
  • *For Aural* Must be able sing scales and chords worked through in syllabus
  • Harmonic techniques – natural, slap, harp and harping techniques
  • Compose or arrange a minimum of 2 pieces on current level
  • Transcribe a selected piece on current level
  • *Optional* Advanced improvisation and solo construction 2

Anthony Bierman

Anthony has completed a Bmus(Hons) degree at the University of Pretoria majoring in Contemporary/Jazz guitar. He has been teaching all styles of guitar (Rock, Blues, Jazz, Pop, RnB/Soul/Funk, Acoustic, Classical etc) full time for the past 6 years. His currently busy studying and preparing to pursue his masters degree in jazz/contemporary guitar at the University of Witwatersrand. Speciliazing in a modern elaboration of the "lap piano" guitar style developed by Jazz pioneer George Van Eps. His also privately studying classical music theory and composition through the university department working towards completing a licentiate in theory and composition through Trinity College.
